KUOW 94.9 Reception in Bellingham

November 6, 2009

Dear Listeners,

We are having some problems with our Bellingham operation. A number of people in Bellingham have expressed their frustration with the erratic signal. We share that frustration and we're working to correct the problem.

The problem lies in getting our signal to the Bellingham transmitter. For quite a long time, we had a very good way of getting the signal to Bellingham by simply picking up and rebroadcasting our HD signal. Recently, we have been receiving interference from an unknown source that has spoiled the reliable reception over the HD system. In its place, we have been using an Internet connection to get the signal to Bellingham which works well most of the time, but periodically it will have a digital hiccup that breaks the connection. That's when you hear either nothing or a very fuzzy connection through your radio receiver. We have some software that contacts us if the signal goes down, but it cannot sense the problem if the device creates noise or stutters.

We are working to correct the larger issue of the interference. In the meantime, I'm trying to catch any interruption to the Internet connection as quickly as possible and get it back online. If you're near a computer when we have an interruption in service, you could assist me with a quick email to let me know when it's gone bad.

Again, I'm sorry for the intermittent service and I hope it won't be too long before we can track down the outside source of this interference and permanently fix the problem.

Yours,

Dane Johnson
