Memorial for Vancouver Soldier Killed in Afghanistan

This morning we take a moment to remember a Northwest soldier who was recently killed in Afghanistan. October marked the deadliest month for American soldiers in Afghanistan since the war started. The casualties include 10 soldiers based at Fort Lewis who were killed by roadside bombs. Tomorrow, the military holds memorial services for several of these soldiers. Among them was Private First Class Christopher Walz. Most people called him Ian. He was from Vancouver, Washington. More »

Artistic Balance

Choreographer Val Caniparoli, a Renton native, spent most of October creating a new ballet with Pacific Northwest Ballet (PNB) company members. Caniparoli's "Seasons" is one of four dances on PNB's "Director's Choice" program. It opens tonight at McCaw Hall. The contemporary program give observers a good idea of how the Northwest's largest ballet company has evolved under Artist Director Peter Boal's leadership. More » Listen to this story

Hutchison, Constantine Wage 'Outsider-Insider' Race

Next week voters will determine Ron Sims' successor. Sims joined the Department of Housing and Urban Development last spring, so a special election is in order for King County Executive. You can look at the race for Seattle City Council Position 6 several ways. It is 12–year council veteran Nick Licata versus energetic newcomer Jessie Israel. She's a well–recognized rising star. Public Health's Uncertain Future

What do immunizations, tuberculosis, and birth control have in common? In King County those health issues fall under the purview of one agency – Public Health. The agency quietly operates in the background until a threat like a pandemic flu surfaces. Like many public agencies, shrinking revenue has forced Public Health to make cutbacks. And it's not just in King County. A recent study by a Washington state think tank shows most local health agencies have reduced staff or eliminated programs for lack of funding. Earlier this year King County considered cutting back funds to track infectious diseases. It was saved at the last minute. Even so, the agency's future remains shaky. More » Listen to this story

Seattle Mayoral Candidate Mike McGinn

Attorney and environmentalist Mike McGinn unleashed a bombshell in the race for Seattle mayor this week. Throughout the campaign, McGinn has vigorously opposed building a downtown tunnel to replace the damaged Alaskan Way Viaduct. But after the City Council unanimously endorsed the project, he announced he would not stand in the way of the tunnel after all. Depending on who you talk to, the move is either brilliant strategy or political suicide. This week, we're taking a closer look at the candidates for Seattle mayor. More » Listen to this story

Seattle Mayoral Candidate Joe Mallahan

Voters in Seattle are apparently having a hard time picking their next mayor. A recent poll by the online news site Publicola found more than one third of voters are undecided in the race. The race features two political newcomers, former attorney and Sierra Club activist Mike McGinn and T–Mobile executive Joe Mallahan. They are in many ways similar. They both call themselves progressive Democrats, both cut their teeth in politics working as Congressional aides, both come from large Irish Catholic families. Both live in the city's north side. But the similarities end there. More » Listen to this story
