Weekday High

Weekday High School Internship Summer 2009

Weekday High is KUOW's summer internship program for seven high school students interested in practicing radio journalism. Students apply in late spring. The six week session takes place in late July through August. Weekday High meets afternoons, Monday through Thursday. Interns report, edit and produce radio stories for podcast and broadcast.

The big story this year is the economic crisis. Weekday High interns will report on how the economic downturn is affecting their lives, their family, their friends and their community.

Meet the 2009 Session Interns

Elena

Molly Anderson, Senior, Lake Washington High School: "To put it simply, I am a public radio junkie. I wake up to 'Morning Edition' on my alarm clock and drive home from lacrosse practice with 'All Things Considered' on in my car (much to the dismay of my carpool, who would rather listen to Taylor Swift or Kanye West). I am excited to learn more about the production of radio, especially as I get older and am faced with the looming question of what to do with my life. With Weekday High I look forward to being out in the community learning about how the changes in our economy are affecting people in our area."

Michelle Dutro, Senior, The Overlake School: "I have always seen writing as the purest form of self expression. Writers find the words to express the emotions that, for most, can be felt but rarely described. I am passionate about writing and I see journalism as a way to share ideas with others. I feel that the best way to reach people with real life stories is to educate them and raise awareness with pure unbiased journalism. I have become increasingly interested in different forms of broadcast journalism and I am excited to explore the radio through KUOW. My goal this summer is to learn as much as I can about how to tell compelling stories that can inspire listeners to care about the subject matter."

Bryce

Bryce Ellis, Senior, Ballard High School: "Throughout my life the radio has played a big part in keeping me both informed and entertained. One station in particular has done a great job of that: KUOW. Time and time again, I have heard the most amazing and inspiring stories from the widest array of people. All of these stories were brought to the airways by one person's willingness to share, and another's passion to really dive in and immerse themselves in the hardships and joys that are other people's lives. I would truly love to be a part of this experience, whether it be in the position of the story teller or the story gatherer."

Ann

Lizzie Kirschner, Senior, Forest Ridge: "Journalism has always interested me because of the immense power it has to influence people. In my mind, radio journalism is not only influential, it is relatable and reliable. Being able to talk to listeners creates a trusted relationship, which I am excited to explore. On top of my fascination with journalism, I am captivated by politics and our government's inner workings. I think it's important to discover how decisions made on Capitol Hill affect the average Joe. My goal this summer is to progress my journalism skills while looking in depth at issues affecting the changing world around us."

Kaitie

Keano Martinez, Senior, Nathan Hale High School: "I'm an environmentalist, DJ, and on–air personality. But I haven't always been interested in broadcasting. When high school came around I found out that KNHC, C89.5 FM was in my school. That's when I found my career. I worked my way up KNHC and will be going into my second year as the student Program Director this school year (my senior year). But I'm soon going to have to move on to a new radio station. So to further my experience in radio broadcasting and hang out in a place I hope to later work in, I applied for Weekday High. This internship program is giving me the chance to progress on the broadcasting side of journalism. Since I've been in a music station, this is an area of broadcasting I haven't done much work in."

Beno Picciano, Senior, Lakeside: "I'm going to come clean: I don't really have any experience with being on the radio. That being said, I listen to radio quite a bit, and I've always kind of imagined myself being on the air (even though I cringe every time I hear a recording of my own voice). I really like to write and tell stories, and I also enjoy hearing the stories that other people have to share. I try to keep an open mind, and I stick by the mantra that 'anything is only as interesting as you make it.' As a result, I find myself intrigued by all sorts of things. This is an awesome opportunity to hear from lots of different people, learn about the community, and make my voice heard!"

Lillian

Artur Sapek, Senior, Inglemoor High School: "My name is Artur Sapek. I'm a senior at Inglemoor High School where I will be spending my second year working on the state–recognized school paper Nordic News as Director of Layout and Sports Section Editor. I have strong interests in the visual arts as well as media and journalism. In my spare time, I am teaching myself graphic design and trying to complete a comic book I have been wanting to do for months. After high school, I hope to travel to New York to study art, media and design. And after that, who knows?"
